An electric bike is one of the most stolen items a thief can target: it is expensive, quick to resell and, thanks to the assist, easy to ride away on. The lock you choose matters more on an e-bike than on any ordinary push bike, and the cheap cable locks sold next to them at the till will not stop a determined thief for more than a few seconds. How to actually keep your e-bike safe
The lock is only half the job. A few habits matter just as much.
- Use two different lock types. A thief carries tools for one attack, rarely two. Pair a Diamond D-lock on the frame with a Gold lock or chain on a wheel.
- Lock the frame, not just a wheel, to a solid, immovable object such as a ground anchor or proper cycle stand.
- Fill the shackle. The less air around the lock, the harder it is to get a tool or jack inside.
- Lock up somewhere busy and well lit. Thieves with grinders avoid crowds and cameras.
- Remove the battery and display when you can, and consider a GPS tracker hidden on the bike.
